The purpose of using handcuffs is to restrict a person’s freedom, necessary for the safe conduct of procedures prescribed by law without possible deviations and delays caused by the behavior of a citizen deprived of his freedom. The device reduces the likelihood of escape, helps prevent attacks on others, and reduces the risk of harming oneself, incl. suicide and other people, prevents the commission of further offenses. To a certain extent, handcuffs serve the function of visually marking a person as a detainee, which makes it difficult to escape in places where it is easy to mix with a crowd. Moreover, in some cases this function of handcuffs is the most important.
